Father’s Day 2022
Post from last year: Father’s Day Last Year
Looking back at Father’s Day last year brought back a flood of memories/feelings. I was still nursing Miles, although I’m guessing it would be one of my last days of attempting that. I remember how HARD it was on Father’s Day. I felt desperate when Joel went to go play pickleball because I had to be with two kids alone for a while and I didn’t know how to do it… We had help from Joel’s sister and family that day to get us through (seems to be a common theme… so thankful for friends and family).
This year looked a lot different, but I still felt pretty helpless! It’s crazy how a year can make you feel like a semi-pro at parenting two kids. Joel got up early and went to Eagen to play pickleball and his mom came over to help with the kids since I’m still basically useless with the kiddos post surgery. We had gone to a grad party the day before and my hands and armpits were rebelling at the thought of moving around with crutches. We drank some coffee and hung out with Miles until Hailey woke up - she slept in past 7am!!! - and then got the kiddos dressed and out the door to go to Perkins with Joel’s dad and grandma. Perkins was so short staffed, which was a bummer because we usually go there as a quick breakfast. The kiddos did well for most of it, but being out for breakfast with a 2.5 year old and a 1 year old for over an hour can get challenging. Joel’s parents were saints for wrestling and helping feed the kiddos since I was useless. I can’t imagine what it will be like when the kids can sit through a meal when we are out to eat without having to use all the energy to entertain them. We made it through breakfast and Joel’s mom came back to the house with the me and the kids until Joel got done playing. Miles went down for a nap (he slept almost 2 hours!) and Hailey watched some TV before going outside and playing a bit with grandma.
Joel got home and ate a showered and his mom headed home. We tried to figure out what to do before heading over to his parent’s house for dinner, but it was almost 100 degrees so everything seemed awful. We ended up hanging out inside and doing a bunch of screen time with Hailey. She actually took a nap yesterday (🙌) and Miles went down for a second, shorter nap as well. We got a little bit of resting time while they snoozed - although I feel like that’s all I’ve been doing the last week.
Once the kiddos woke up, we packed them into the car and went to Target to get some things. I rode around in the electric scooter with Hailey on my lap.
After shopping, we headed to Joel’s parents house to celebrate Father’s Day with the family. Joel’s sister K is just amazing, she played with the kiddos so much and was SO helpful! Joel’s mom got out some buckets and the kids played outside on the deck with the hose. That was the best activity! Miles LOVED it. Joel and Hailey would dump cold water on his head and he didn’t even react he was too busy.
We ate food, Joel got steak from the grill and packed up the kids and some cookie dough to head home. Both the kiddos went down pretty easy. Joel and I got to end the night with some fresh baked cookies and starting a movie.
It was a bummer though - right when we were falling asleep before 10, our neighbors started lighting off fireworks! I was so worried the kids were going to wake up!! Thankfully, the kids slept through it and they wrapped up their fireworks in about 10 minutes… but jeeeesh.
