Friday…
Hailey: ooooooofta, poor girl is just struggling. Five days in a row now she has woken up screaming at 5:30 am. She is definitely not ready to get up but won’t go back to bed. One morning she was just inconsolable, lying on the floor scream crying. It’s so hard to not be able to help or understand what is even the matter. She also has been very unhappy in the evenings. She ends up a puddle on the floor most nights. She is going through a “me/mine” phase where she screams it but you don’t know what she’s talking about so she gets even more frustrated. I know there’s a lot of change going on and it’s a tough age but it’s hard not to get frustrated. I want to help her so badly but between not sleeping and trying to feed a crying newborn nonstop, it’s been a very trying week.
Thank goodness for daycare, she seems to be having a great time there between the bouncy house and water days and having a routine.
Miles: Saw the doctor Monday for his 2 week checkup (at 3 weeks since I forgot to take him last week) - all looks good! He was up to 8 pounds 11 ounces - jumping from the 29th percentile to the 35th percentile and was in the 92nd percentile for height at 22 inches long.
She looked at his tongue tie the lactation consultant commented on and said it was so small that there was barely anything she would be able to clip. He’s gaining weight like a champ and it’s not causing pain so she wouldn’t recommend doing anything about it.
I got the green light to let him sleep as long as he wants - when he decides to do that… hopefully someday soon. She said it’s very normal the amount he is feeding and to not be worried that it seems like it’s a lot, it will hopefully slow down at some point. He is eating about every hour during the day - except the last day and a half he has been eating and screaming constantly. I’m going back for a weight check next Thursday just to make sure he is getting enough - I’m sure he is based on the diapers but with how upset he gets when he isn’t nursing makes me want to confirm he is eating enough. It was a good reminder to look back at how much Hailey was eating and sleeping around this age (first mom detailed notes! I kept track of all of her eating and sleeping) - even with formula, Hailey was eating about as often as Miles is, but breastfeeding is so much less clean up.
Our pediatrician said she can hear Miles’ reflux (similar to Hailey) but it doesn’t seem to bother him right now so no need to do anything - but if it starts to bother him we can start him on the stuff Hailey had.
He is definitely not one of those babies that sleeps through the night right away. I’ve gotten a couple 3 hour stretches but he usually gives me a 2.5 hour stretch and then 1.5 hour stretches after that. Joel is still sleeping downstairs so he can get some sleep since he has to keep up with Hailey after work.
We went to our first baby class through ECFE. It was a different experience. Miles is the youngest there and they range up to 11 months old. There are 7 week twins but they might switch to the afternoon class - that would be a bummer. I start the second time mama class through Amma next week and am looking forward to that.
Joel’s dad has come a couple times this week to hold and bounce Miles for an hour so I can get a break to clean the house or rest. That has been so helpful!
Workouts: Miles hasn’t let me set him down much so I haven’t been able to get on the bike this week. I’ve gotten done walks in - even one with a friend. I also did my first run/walk postpartum. It was just over 3 miles with probably a mile or so of running in there. I was going 11 minute miles and I felt like I was sprinting! For the most part it felt OK, I had a little pain afterwards in my pelvis area and I’m definitely a little sore today.
Joys of the week: Joel’s friends came over, I was able to make some sloppy joes in the crockpot. They are 21 weeks pregnant so it was probably eye opening to have a crazy house. Hailey was challenging at first (she fell off the chair face first and busted her lip, exactly how I knew she would fall after I told her multiple times to sit down…) and Miles cried the whole time. I had to keep taking him back to the room to feed him and calm him down, it was definitely stressful and a little lonely.
Joel’s sister was also a lifesaver and brought dinner over one night for us. We didn’t even have to tell her anything that we wanted, she just cooked stuff up and brought it over and it was fantastic. We even had leftovers for a few days so it was perfect. One of my friends also knew I was struggling with sleep, so she sent me a Caribou gift card. It was so nice and thoughtful.
Struggles this week: sleeping…. And the constant feeding. It’s tough because I’m the only one that can get food in him. We tried a bottle when he was hysterical when Joel’s friends were over and he hated it and ended up throwing it all up all over me… I was covered in spit up that evening. Miles also didn’t like to be worn, which is tough… we’ve done lots of bouncing on the exercise ball
