Once we got to the ED, they checked him out and everything seemed stable. Joel met me there and Alyssa stopped in after her shift to say hello. Joel left after a bit to go get Hailey while Miles and I waited to be admitted. They called the incident BRUE and wanted to keep him overnight since he's so young. (Jaimie was amazing and came and got my car keys and moved my car to her house so it didn't sit unattended). We waited for over 5 hours (definitely an eventful evening in the ED...) and finally got up to a room a little after 8pm.
Right when we got up to the room, he had another episode of gasping and not breathing. They deep suctioned him with a little tube down his nose to clear the airway and gave him some oxygen and eventually got him breathing again after some stimulation. The doctor came in and checked him out and they decided they wanted to send him down to the PICU via rapid response. Within minutes, there were 11 people in our room discussing him and ready to bring him down. The PICU fellow decided that he should stay where he was at and have air (not oxygen) through his nose just to stimulate him and keep him out of apneatic events and out of the PICU. They gave him an IV which is so sad to watch… they use ultrasound to make sure they are in the right place and then put a cast like thing over it to make sure it doesn’t fall out. He had quite a bit of grunting and not sleeping until they turned the airflow down. We didn't have the most restful night ever, but he was stable all night.
Around 4am, they let me know that he had tested positive for para influenza 3, which was likely causing a lot of his distress. Basically - the cold that Hailey had moved to his chest, causing bronchiolitis. Since he’s so little, he doesn’t know how to get the mucus out, so he chokes on it and causes apneatic events.
I took a shower and ordered some food and wandered down to get some coffee since Miles was stable and the nurses were going to check him out. Since we came in through the ED, I wasn't properly checked in as a guest so they had to hold me at the front desk for a little bit to get me added. Once I got back up to his room, there was a doctor and two nurses working on him. They had to deep suction him and then he went bradycardic... They moved him off of just air to oxygen and his stats went stable.
We had the absolute best nurse (Alicia) that helped him for a bit in the morning before the doctors made their rounds. They came around after Joel had gotten there and were great, they did such a good job at clearly explaining what was going on and what the next steps were going to be. They wanted Miles to go 24 hours without needing a deep suction and wanted us to take an Infant CPR class before we would be discharged. They took Miles off oxygen around lunch time and he tolerated it really well. He actually slept the entire day, barely waking up even when they unswaddled him and took his vitals. His resting heart rate shot up for about an hour or so to 180-190s, but it eventually came back down so they weren't too worried.
I had a fun incident with the cafeteria - I ordered lunch for Joel and Me at around 10:40 am. It takes them about 45 minutes to an hour to bring the orders up. I ordered a cheese quesedilla. They brought it up 3 different times with chicken... finally at 2:40ish, one of the nurses assistants went down to the cafeteria for us and ordered it with just cheese and brought it back up. It was so nice of her and I finally got some lunch.
Our pediatrican saw that Miles had gotten admitted and reached out to see how we were doing, which was really thoughtful - she's great.
Joel headed home to let Dakota out and spend some time with Hailey so Miles and I got to hang out. I took a little break and our nurse hung out with Miles so I could walk over to Davannis and get some dinner. When I got back, I chatted with some of the nurses a little bit and then settled in and snuggled with Miles and watched Pitch Perfect. Around 7:30, I hit a wall and could not stay awake. Luckily, Miles was semi sleepy and our night nurse stopped in and told me to lay down and she fed him and got his vitals and got him sleeping. I slept so hard between all his feedings last night, the exhaustion finally caught up to me. Around 2am, Miles was breathing a little funny so the nurse came in sucked out his nose with just normal suction and that seemed to help him.
We have the Infant CPR class at 11am today and then I'm thinking we will be discharged.
I am so thankful for our friend and families that have helped us get through this stay and made things easier for us - sending us thoughts, bringing/sending coffee/cookies and stuff, moving my car, helping with Hailey, just everything. I'm very thankful for the hospital staff - they are just excellent here. I'm thankful we will get to go home soon with our baby that is on the road to full health.. it has been a very emtional couple of days.
OMG! How terrifying! I am so glad you were able to get an ambulance quickly and that Miles is doing ok and you have an explanation for what is going on. But yikes. You guys have been through so much with your bleeding issue and now this. I hope you are home soon as I know how disruptive hospitals can be. But I also know there is comfort in being under their care. We are lucky to live in an area with excellent children's hospitals - and hospitals in general. Childrens is so so great, though. Paul had to get an IV and they are so good at getting them in tiny babies/kiddos. That ultrasound approach makes it so much easier. I feel like the process of him getting an IV was way way faster than any of my experiences over the last several years! Thank God because you don't want them to experience any more discomfort than is necessary!
